THE OSCARS 2016

Ready, Set, ACTION!

The Oscars 2016, here they are! Quite honestly, this year I have not seen one of the movies up for the best picture, where oh where did this year go?? What we can discuss is the fashion, probably the best designs I have seen so far.

BIG congratulations to Brie Larson in Room, so young and pretty!

 Look at this wonderfully feminine dress, it has flow, color, weight and finesse.  The subtle detail of sheer organza lining the bodice yields a soft silhouette. 

Best Supporting Actress

 Lovely Alicia Vikander, for The Danish Girl, she is 27 years young!

Alicia is wearing  a Louis Vuitton, designed shorter in front so she could 'dance all night.' The hemline has a balloon like look, reminiscent of the 1980s balloon dresses!  Here, given a millennial look with silver accents and and easy flow.

And gracious Priyanka in silky Zuhair Murad couture. This is a great dress, it moves so well and does not take up space.  The billowy heavy gowns are a thing of the past, go light! Go natural! The belt is fun, but I would prefer a thin metallic silver band.

A BIG congratulations to Leonardo DiCaprio! You are such a terrific talent, and finally, yes finally, the 'powers that be' have decided to give you an award we all know should have been bestowed since your genius in Titanic, and later a top favorite film of mine, Aviator.

TOPAZ

For as long as I can remember, the "topaz" has had a lasting mystery for me.  Even its name, how many times does it evoke an air of exotic tastes, of far away places yet to be explored? 

The topaz is the birth gemstone for November, and represents true love and success, also empathy and healing. It is the gemstone of royalty.

I have two favorites, the Imperial Topaz, and London Blue Topaz. Swiss topaz of course is so pretty too, a bit brighter than the London, and then there is the Sky Blue topaz, just as it sounds.

Bright orange gold in deep tones faceted so that you witness the sun rays of dawn. Such is the precious Imperial:

Topaz evokes wisdom, healing and royalty. It seems King Henry needed a LOT of topaz to keep him somewhat balanced, but  alas, the topaz did not have any help to his six wives!

And the London Blue Topaz, so soft and blue, so noticeable to all that come across its path~

The blue topaz is also one of the "modern" blue gemstones for December. You could say this stone does double duty representing two months.

Query:  Do you think these gems have certain powers of their own, as so often cited in chakra books, astrology and so on?  

I am really not so sure, but will acknowledge that these topaz gems are certainly from the earth with definite physical properties and molecular structures. And if loyal admirers imprint upon these attributes, perhaps through positive mindset alone the attributes then become real. 

A possibility.

But what is definite is the natural beauty bestowed upon us admirers.  As a little girl, in some of the streams we would play in, yes! play! Before pollution and organized play dates :), we would turn over rocks, and seek out the jewels of quartz that hid along the tiny banks of rock and silt.  Quartz is a lesser derived form of topaz.

Once in a while we would find such a natural gem, rinse it off in the bubbly stream waters, and pocket it to add to our collections at home.  Some had faded algae streaks impressed over time from their humble aqueous dwelling, others with jagged edges that made holes in our pockets for our mothers to sew!

So there it was and still is in my heart, in childhood the topaz as a handy motif or totem watching over us.

And now, the mighty topaz presents as a best friend for all to admire.

BIRTHDAYS

Birthdays, I just love them! Really and truly, once a year, a special day is all for you! Yours alone to claim the prize of another year, a year of blessings and no disguise, you are who you are and happy to be YOU!

And yes, today IS my birthday. I love my birthday. I love the number 8, the month of November brings bright leaves of red and gold, colors to portend the coming of Christmas.  But not yet!  It is November, the month of topaz swathed in amber sun and hues of London blue. Gemstones indigenous to November.

Birthdays bring up those days in your life that are watermarks, hallmarks, stepping stones to what becomes defined as your life. I have been blessed with all those around me during the course of my years, and I hope yours as well.   

A few hallmarks of my own?

Let us start with my actual birthday! Scroll back in time and envision a 1950's police escort on motorcycle ~ my dad was driving the car with my very expectant mother and his mother in the car too. Most likely my grandmother in tow as someone with some sense during times of stress (my parents were naturally prone to over-excitement).  I can just see my grandmother flag down a policeman as my father was lost. He mistook a school for the hospital!  Such excitement babies can bring!  That day my dad was running for local political office, he lost the election, but won a baby girl! Born on Election Day!

Moving forward to my 6th year, my mom made a 6 tier birthday cake in cascading levels from small to large, all in pink icing.  She put charms in the cake as prizes for all the children that day, so fun!  

I remember my 13th birthday as well. I always wanted to be 13. You are a teenager then! So grown up, so smart, we have all the answers and so many more things to learn, wow life is intense, complex and ready for a 13 year old as myself!

My 16th birthday brought a small dinner party, again my mom did so well in planning this event. I will cherish it always.

Then, the teen years come and go, I really loved the age of 19 and if I could scroll back, that would certainly be one of the years. A complicated, strong, powerful year of deep studies, associations old and new, and a waistline that I hardly see anymore but know it is there :) 

The decade of the 20s, the brain is still developing and steadying by the age of 25 into what becomes personal identity, and at 25 the year of marriage and peace of mind and growth and love and finally having a direction in life.

Children come into our lives in the 30s, and each birthday now shifts into the birthdays of our children. But behind all that, my special day in November is still all my own, and I hold onto that as it is my stronghold, my own identity that lasts so that I can be an attentive mother for the betterment of my children.

The calendar pages fly by, so much to do in the 40s, so much love and sacrifice for future generations; the effort is worthwhile. Children and aging parents, and a female physiology that changes as well, oh so subtly. And each birthday year, whether praying for family unity and peace and spiritual guidance or helping a child grow, November 8th remains my day. 

November is the 11th month~ parallel lines reach toward infinity, they are constant and never change.  They are in alignment, but never join; they are parallel. The 8th is the
number 8, which turned on its side is the Greek symbol of infinity ∞. The 11th month on the 8th day, so in alignment with each other.

The 50s bring strength and resolve, a true sense of being, a knowledge that hanging in there and being true to thyself is the best reward. Help others, know thy surroundings and having a good laugh work wonders. Try it!

The future? Who knows? But today, it is my birthday.

Such a precious day to be cherished. Count your own blessing as there are many.

And YOUR birthday? Everyone has one!

GRADUATIONS AND WEDDINGS

May is a month filled with graduations! June is a month for the blushing bride. Yes, the flowers are in bloom, the bees are buzzing, and daylight has extended from the dark hours of winter to bright skies, even at 8 o'clock at night!

Just this morning the birds are noisy and excited, they know that certain events are yet to happen, they anticipate with such song and glee the beginnings of our day.

And so the month of May progresses, until, yes, the march to graduation.  Students are getting prepared, colleges set up their banners, and after long hours and hard work, the mind has opened up to new beginnings, new vistas. 

My advice? Always go to your graduation, and always have a wedding! Both of these wonderful events are replete with unity, they bring together the past, present and future, all in one package, one moment forever lasting in your memory. And best of all you share these moments with all those participating. These are happy moments, and are an example of the best of humanity.

Graduations are a part of a large community of scholars, students, teachers, mentors, speakers and experts.  They are embodiments of experience.  What the classroom does not teach, the visiting speaker will bring. And we, the listeners, the ones so eager to learn, we must be attentive, that is our job, our gift from all the happenings surrounding us.

Weddings are a gift as well. Our commitment to one another. The ceremony is important, be sure to experience this necessary part of our way of saying, I love you. The gathering of friends and family, no matter how large or small, becomes serene and in its simplicity will emit a holiness to the blessed never to be forgotten. Such is the sacrament of marriage.

And know too that weddings do not have to be a circus, an advertisement of privilege or excess.  A wedding is the joining of two loving people committed to each other for now and the future, no matter the circumstance, no matter the challenge. 

In fact, graduations and weddings can very well be synonymous. After all, once we enter marriage through the threshold of the wedding ceremony, we graduate to a new level, a new life differing from whence we came.

Both graduations and weddings serve as vehicles of change. They also tell us the we are ready. The graduation and wedding ceremony are powerful symbols, they show us the possibilities of life, of what can be accomplished and created anew.

In fact, both graduations and weddings share the same attributes. They are both like the rainbow, unifying the old with the new~

 So as you partake of the fullness of this time of year, breathe deeply and savor the aroma of May flowers, of June pinks, yellows and whites.


Be beautiful in that cap and gown. Stand tall!

Be lovely and demure in your wedding white. Be a queen!

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY

A TRIBUTE TO OUR MOTHERS

Mothers Day comes but once a year, and yes, so many mothers tell me it should be celebrated every day, not just the one!

on children

A Mother's role is a complex one. We spend a good part of our lives being caregivers, tying shoelaces, and answering difficult questions (or trying to) regarding life, physics, religion, calculus, how a flower grows, why the pet cat or dog is lost and can't find its way home, why the sky is blue, why do we need food (or sleep), why oh why oh why!!

These are children's questions that require and demand a definite answer, and many times of course we cannot give that simple response.  

But listening closely, our children can teach us that perhaps, life can be simple, and with some thinking, the simple response will come to us.  If not then in that moment, perhaps later, while we are drifting off to sleep after a long day, then yes! The answer for our child comes to mind!  And of course right then this lovely child is now peacefully resting, no need to disturb, tomorrow is another day. A new, different question.

on being a daughter, a friend

As daughters, we all had mothers, whether we ourselves are mothers or not. We have had the influence of another woman in our lives, and if not a biological mother, perhaps an aunt, a teacher, a friend who stepped into that role at some point in our lives. Motherhood is an eternal truth, it is an icon of beauty and of giving. Whether to the lives of children, of students, or of offspring, a woman who serves as a mother in multiple roles is in service to help others.

And then of course, as we as giving human beings in our role as mothers, we are also our own person. Yes, surprise!  Mom had and has a life of her own. She can nod wisely to a friend, another mom perhaps, or a sister, or a good friend, and to the surprise of an attentive child, confusion ensues.  Mom has a secret language happening with other Moms!  How can this be? She is supposed to be here for me only, not to be in communication with others! And baby gets a warm, snuggling hug. Ah yes, mothers do indeed have a secret language.

We moms are indeed quite human, and social, and need the camaraderie of adults around us.  We will be even better with the social network of others like us.

                                     Today we celebrate Mothers around the world!  

Be your own person, have love in your heart, and in doing so you will be an even better Mom. Keeping your children in mind as your reason for being, you can soar upward and teach them the secrets of life, how to get along with others, what is right and wrong, forgiveness, compassion, beauty seeking, and love.  

For a mother's love is unconditional, we love our children purely for the sake of loving. 

Our love is protective, it is comprehensive, it is enduring ♡
